Types Of Central Heating Systems

There are three main types of central heating systems, these are:

Condensing Boiler Central Heating

By far the most common type of central heating system, the condensing boiler central heating system is the most energy efficient and economical available.

At its core is a condensing boiler, usually that would be a combi boiler, which works using mains water pressure so there is no need for water storage tanks. There is also no need for a hot water cylinder, as the combi boiler can heat up water instantly.

As a result a condensing combi boiler central heating system is perfect smaller homes.

Considerations:
  • High Efficiency
  • Cheap To Run
  • No Hot Water Storage Tank
  • No Hot Water Cylinder
  • Instant Hot Water
  • Compact
  • Ideal For Smaller Homes
  • Lower Hot Water Flow Rates
  • Running A Bath Will Take Longer
  • Not As Affective in Supplying Hot Water To Multiple Taps At Once

System Boiler Central Heating

There are two kinds of system boiler central heating models, these are a vented low-pressure, and a non-vented high pressure system.

Both types require a hot water cylinder, which is commonly found in an airing cupboard. This means that once heated, hot water is available on demand without the need for space-hungry storage tanks in the loft.

These central heating systems use System boilers which conveniently come with most of their components built-in, which means that they are cheaper and easier to install.

The system boiler central heating system is therefore ideal for homes where there is no loft space.

Considerations:
  • Free Up Loft Space
  • Require Hot Water Cylinder
  • Instant Heating
  • Instant Hot Water To Multiple Taps
  • Easy To Install
  • Best For Homes With No Loft Space
  • Lower Efficiency Than Condensing Heating
  • Time Needed For Hot Water To Reheat

Conventional Central Heating

This system is not the most energy efficient because a lot of pipe-work is involved, which means that heat loss is higher.

The conventional central heating system works on the principle of storing water. It requires two storage tanks, which are usually located in a loft, one for cold water, and the other is an expansion feed tank. The system usually runs using a regular, or heat only boiler.

A water cylinder is also needed for this system to work, as it houses the hot water once it is heated, which conveniently provides hot water to multiple taps. The conventional heating system however, requires a significant amount of installation space.

Therefore best suited to larger homes where ample loft space is available, and hot water demand is higher.

Considerations:
  • Instant Hot Water Supply To Multiple Outlets
  • Instant Heating
  • High Hot Water Demands
  • Ideal For Larger Homes
  • High Hot Water Flow Rate
  • Lower Efficiency Than Other Systems
  • Uneconomical For Space
  • Hot Water Must Be Stored Even If Not Used
