The Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK (SEDBUK) rating system was created by the government in conjunction with boiler manufacturers in order to provide more accurate energy efficiency ratings for boilers.
Previously, boilers were graded using only their manufacturer’s laboratory tests. However since the introduction of the SEDBUK system, boiler ratings have become more precise, simple and consistent.
The SEDBUK rating works by assessing how much fuel used by a boiler is converted to heat. The percentage rating given indicates the annual efficiency the boiler will achieve in typical household conditions.
For simple assessment, the SEDBUK ratings are categorised from A to G, with A representing the highest efficiency of over 90%, and G being the lowest below 70% efficiency. The SEDBUK rating is now highly recognised by installers and many users, and can usually be found in a boiler’s specifications as listed by its manufacturer.
Boilers that are most likely to carry the highest SEDBUK A band are condensing boilers, with the most popular type being combi boilers. As these types of boilers are over 90% efficient, they have less carbon emissions, and guarantee a significant reduction in fuel costs.
It is therefore recommended that when choosing a replacement boiler, where possible a SEDBUK A rated one should be considered first.
